WHAT’S NEW?

Moving Up Without the Moving Truck: Our Digital Relocation

Weeeeeeeeeee’re back!

Hey everyone, we're thrilled to reconnect with you all! We hope you've missed us as much as we've missed you!

You might have noticed a fresh new vibe to our newsletter – that’s because we’ve MOVED
well electronically speaking anyways. We've migrated to the awesome platform of BEEHIIV, offering a sleeker design and powerful backend tools to enhance your experience with us. It's like upgrading from a flip phone to the latest smartphone – you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Thanks to DK's diligent research and leadership, we've smoothly transitioned to our new home. Trust us, it's been a journey – think of it like moving apartments in NYC! But with fewer cardboard boxes and no need to bribe friends with pizza to help move a couch.

We're here, and we're ready to serve you better than ever before.

But wait, there's more! We're not just sprucing up our newsletter; we're revolutionizing it.

Here's the scoop:

Newsletter Archive: Remember those newsletters you accidentally deleted or lost in the email abyss? Fear not! We now have a website through beehiiv where you can look back at every newsletter we sent out. It’s like having a time machine, but just for emails.

Sharing is Caring: Want to spread the love? You can now share the newsletter with friends/family more easily. It's like forwarding a chain email, but less annoying and with actual value.

Membership Community: Ever feel like you want to be part of a big campfire? We’re in the process of launching our membership community, and you can now join the waitlist if you want to be more involved and find like-minded people within the community. (We'll dish out more details on the membership community in the next newsletter.)

RSVP to Events: And because we love seeing your lovely faces, we now have all our events on the Luma event platform. You can hit the "RSVP Events" tab to join any event. It’s easier than ordering takeout – and way more fulfilling.

New Sections: We will be adding new sections to add more value for your reading pleasure, so stay tuned

Let's make 2024 our best year yet!

THE SUGARY EFFECT

Investing in People: A Story of Optimism and Realism in Relationships (Part 1)

During my holiday card mailing initiative, I received an amazing text from one of my friends in LA when I asked for a mailing address, and I’d like to share it with you now:

'Sorry for the late text (your time), but with a little one, I have to take time when I get it. I wanted to thank you for your intention and your skill in maintaining friendship. It’s not lost on me that friendships, like any investment, sometimes don’t pan out. They require attention and effort and often are subject to circumstances beyond control. I know you’ve invested in people only to not see a real return.

You inspire me by the way you don’t think so much about that... you orient yourself to being the kind of person and friend you want to be and accept whatever comes. Thank you for that inspiration, and for your friendship, even if we don’t see each other much.’

It was truly touching, and I felt really seen in that moment.

I may carry a generally optimistic lean on most things, including my relationships, but the reality is that relationships are generally unpredictable and sometimes, despite your efforts, things just don’t pan out or go the way you expected them to with what you invest in people.

Accepting this is crucial in coping with the reality that not all relationships will flourish, even with significant investment.

And of course, this can also have a compounding effect over time, the more times you experience this. With the number of relationships I try to maintain, you can imagine how many orders of magnitude my experience with this might be.

It doesn’t feel good, and I’m fine admitting that. But developing resilience in the face of this disappointment is imperative.

What has helped keep me grounded and content is focusing on the kind of friend I aspire to be. It's not just about the dynamics of 'our' relationship but also about how 'I' choose to contribute to the world.

If you know me as a friend, you know this about me. In doing so, I alleviate the pressure of trying to control the outcome of every friendship and this allows for a more fulfilling experience overall.

Let's be clear: it's crucial to have healthy expectations and reciprocity in friendships. However, it's equally important to consider how we want to show up personally. Incorporating this perspective leads to a deeper sense of fulfillment in our relationships moving forward.

Remember, just because others may not follow our path doesn't diminish our own choices. We can only control ourselves. If we find contentment in that, we'll approach relationships with a healthier mindset.

Balancing the investment in friendships with a perspective for your own personal growth and contributions, you’ll find greater contentment with yourself in spite of the unpredictability of relationships.

AND DON’T SAY I DIDN’T TELL YOU ABOUT

YES BABE

Here within the Sugary community, we are always on the lookout for other communities that share our values and are dedicated to nurturing connection in their own unique ways.

We respect them, we collaborate with them and we celebrate them.

Our approach is from a position of abundance rather than a scarcity mindset that tends to exist out there.

Simply put, there’s always enough room at the table for everyone and we make room for those that share in our mission to elevate the art of community.

One such community is YES BABE.

Founded by Veronica Cabezas and Tessa Velazquez, YESBABE is:

‘“A social and culinary lab celebrating global traditions through a Latin lens”.

Both Veronica and Tessa are consummate hosts and skilled chefs who lead with their hearts in any event they are a part of.

The moment you enter a YES BABE event, you immediately feel a soulful warmth as the sights, sounds and smells of that perfect “mezcal” intoxicate your senses.

Heart and hearth are at the center of a new series they are launching called En'Tablao.

Think pintxos bar (small bites) meets grazing table.

This culinary adventure is paired with music, good vibes and health dose of heritage with a Latin flare.

Through this series, Veronica and Tessa seek to break down the barriers of plating etiquette and invites interaction with the chefs, hosts and fellow diners as you navigate the table, choosing plates and sharing dishes...in essence sharing the love.

Their first event will be Friday Feb. 9th in conjunction with Rosa and limited tickets are available.

To celebrate this moment, YES BABE is offering the Sugary community a gracious discount to attend this launch event.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Bradley Theodore

Irreverent. Prismatic. Visceral.

If inner beauty could be turned inside out and revealed in all its glory, you’d find at the core of this practice, the brilliant visualizations of Bradley Theodore.

I first met Bradley many years ago through fated collaboration in an arts and culture salon series at the Mondrian hotel (now the NOMO Hotel), in which he was debuting a collection of his entitled “The Three Graces” and my artist Grace Weber was invited to perform for the evening (the “4th Grace” as it were 😊).

I immediately found Bradley‘s work to be charming and effortlessly accessible in a way that few artists ever achieve.

Since that moment Bradley’s career has only risen to new stratospheres of success, and acclaim yet his approach to his creative visualizations have remained remarkably focused and true to his artistic nature.

The like-ability of Bradley‘s work is hard to deny with its infinite play on the chromatic spectrum paired with a distillation of complex imagery reconstructed through thoughtful outlines that convey simplicity, but through a deep understanding of structure and form.

Be it on the walls of a pristine high-end gallery or an inspired mural lending beauty to otherwise drab city streets, Bradley’s work is iconic and straddles the world of fine art and pop culture with a dexterous balance.

An amazing artist and friend, I salute Bradley’s gifts and hope that his work will bring you the same level of enjoyment that I experience every time I see one of his amazing works of art.

Thank you for taking the time to read to the end!

I hope you found something inspiring and meaningful in my content and until next time, explore the possibilities of NYC.
