WHATāS NEW?
You may have noticed a small addition at the top of last weekās newsletter.
Following the listing of every event, an emoji icon(s) of either:
š āØ š² šļø
For months Iāve heard various bits of questions such as to what events to attend and whether I am directly affiliated to this or that event. As this is a list completely curated by me, I think all are worth checking out and I am deliberately creating a diverse offering so thereās a little something for everyone.
As a way of making it easier to make an informed decision, Iāve designated 4 icons that should help immediately clarify some of your most commonly asked questions:
š - Sugary Sweet - This is an event organized and produced by me or is directly affiliated with our community somehow (i.e. speaking engagement).
⨠- Trusted Source - I either know the person(s)/organization(s), hosting the event and/or have attended the event personally. This recommendation comes from first hand knowledge in one form or another.
š² - Roll of the Dice - I have not personally attended the event and/or I do not know the organizerā¦However, it looks interesting to me and if I had the time, I would personally take a chance and attend it to see what it was about.
šļø - Admit 1 - This is a ticketed event and is NOT free (but we do try to get preferred pricing for our community when we can).
I hope this new addition will help you to make a better decision. Now get out there and explore your cities and the various communities and events that are the lifeblood of our town!
THE SUGARY EFFECT

Yuzu & Mustardā¦for itās own sake.
For Its Own Sake
Not too long ago I met up with a Jewish friend of mine who I love getting together with periodically to wax poetic on any number of topics and themes that have graced our minds. I particularly enjoy our meetups because both he and his wife are very inquisitive by their very nature and an evening out together almost assuredly promises a fantastic evening of banter.
Following a filling meal, we ended up at a mixology bar for a nightcap. As we sat down in this gorgeously appointed bar, we were presented with a tome of cocktails.
Fascinating concoctions it seems was par for the course here as we flipped through page after page of libations each more interesting than the next.
I had concluded my search early with the focus on a classic espresso martini because Iām currently on a quest to discover the cityās best version of this celebrated adult beverage, but my friend was studying the options and his brow furrowed a bit.
I asked him if he saw anything he liked and his response was one of agreeable apprehension.
Indecision it seems hung on the selection entitled, āYuzu and mustard cocktail.ā
The beverage intrigued him enough to hold his attention but not quite enough for him to commit.
In the moment a light smile formed on my face and I told him, āyou knowā¦it might just be worth experiencing.ā
My friend looked up, intrigued and asked, āWhy do you say that?ā
I looked at him directly and responded, ābecause sometimes the opportunity to just experience something new is a privilege in and of itselfā¦I mean how many times do you get to experience something totally new these days? Itās like a mini miracle, or perhaps a mitzvah as it were?ā
The use of the term mitzvah drew my friendās inspired attention.
I think he was pleasantly surprised that I even knew the term much less the way in which I applied it.
In the moment a light smile formed on his face and he told me one wordā¦
āLishmaā.
I was understandably clueless.
Recognizing my unfamiliarity with the term, he explained āit means in Hebrew, for its own sake.ā
He went on to say that while typically the phrase is used in reference to the study of the Torah, the evolution of the term has also been used at times to refer to appreciating moments of inherent value or beautyā¦for its own sake.
What an elegant concept and a rather artful way to approach life in my opinion.
Sometimes the things in life most worth appreciating are the very moments when you are merely open to appreciating them in the first place.
As our orders came in, we toasted to the moment and took our first sips.
My espresso martini, quite exquisite, his yuzu mustard cocktailā¦
Very much āyuzu mustardyā, my friend replied.
āWell, what did you think?ā, I eagerly asked.
My friend looked at me with a grin and said, āNot sureā¦but I enjoyed tasting and experiencing the drinkā¦
ā¦for its own sake.ā
Lishmaā¦

PAST EVENTS
May 17th - Come Make Dumplings With Us - About 25 of you joined us as we continued our AAPI programming by partnering with the New York Asian Arts Festival and James Beard nominee chef Christine Wong to offer an intimate class in making dumplings literally from scratch (yes that includes wrappers)! It was an amazing session as Chef Wong was attentive to everyone from the beginner to those a touch more seasoned. It was honestly an amazing experience and folks really appreciated the expert guidance by chef Wongā¦not to mention literally eating the fruits of our labor shortly thereafter.

James Beard nominated Chef Christine Wong showing everyone how its done.
AND DONāT SAY I DIDNāT TELL YOU ABOUTā¦
Ask for Jackā¦thank me later.
Maiyomi Tradition Technique
Ok full disclosure. This recommendation is NOT for the faint of heart.
I am often in conversation where a general query in the form of a near universal complaint/cry for help inevitably surfaces, āDo I know any good massage therapists out there.
You know how much I hate the concept of gatekeeping so, my answer to that is simplyā¦
ā¦yes.
His name is Jack.
Jack and his team are the operators of Maiyomi Tradition and Technique in Chinatown.
They specialize in deep tissue and qi gong massage therapy.
I discovered Jack quite by accident. I happened to have twinged a back muscle and was in Chinatown looking for an affordable solution and I came upon Maiyomi.
The place is pretty barebones and I honestly thought that I was gonna get average but affordable treatment. Trust me, itās stupid affordable.
As it turns out Jack and his team were about to go āinā on my minor malady.
To say Jack went deep with the massage is a bit of an understatement (granted I did tell him to give me the maximum pressure and I could have asked for less pressure), it honestly felt like Jack punched a hole through me.
Not gonna lie, it was a painful massage to get throughā¦I criedā¦and I aināt even ashamed to tell you!
Butā¦a magical thing happenedā¦I felt instantly better and over the next day or two, the twinge in my back melted away completely and I had an even greater range of motion in my body than before.
I was kinda stunned. It actually workedā¦and Iāve been going to him ever since.
I sent DK there and he was all Mr. Tough guy until he went under Jackās hand and admitted he too cried tears of humility, but also admitted that he felt better after.
Soā¦for those of you looking for true no frills deep tissue massage for healing and not comfortā¦and are willing to endure some real pain to feel better in the long run, I donāt think youāll find a much better group of practitioners than Jack and his cohorts over at Maiyomi.
It might be a quiet conspiracy that pervades Chinatown, that a great deal of practitioners take a rather cynical view of Westerners and their tolerance for pain. Most adopt a stance of giving comfort rather than actual tangible treatment results because it saves them the effort and Westerners, āwouldnāt know the difference anyways.ā
Not Jack.
For Jack himself, heās all about standing on business and will only let up if you insist.
In chatting with Jack over the course of several sessions, learned that he had immigrated here to earn enough money to send home to his family in China and ultimately hopes to make enough that he can retire once and for all and return to the motherland where all his friends and family reside. I for one have no problem supporting his dream to get back to his family even if it is one treatment at a time.
So give Maiyomi a try, and tell Jack that I sent you. I think youāll be glad you did.
DM me if you would like more details.
THE SWEET & SALTY
Well do you?
The Only Acceptable Answer
As many of you know I harp on and on about my anti-flaking stance in general.
I used to have these terms to my events that read a bit like a contract at the end of every RSVP confirmation.
While effective, even I admit it could perhaps be a bitā¦much.
However, lately Iāve adopted an alternative method that has proven very effective and Iām happy to share it with all of you to reduce the amount of flakers in you communities.
In either Luma or Partiful (sorry Eventbrite) you can include mandatory questions that all your RSVPs must answer before they can confirm their registration.
So one of the questions that I make mandatory isā¦
ā¦asking folks whether they will flake or not.
But hereās the catchā¦
ā¦I offer multiple choicesā¦except that I only offer only one type of choice reallyā¦
ā¦that you wonāt flake.
So like it or not, and whichever way you answer right from the get-go, you are confirming that you will not in fact flake and you are giving your word as a person of integrity.
Over time Iāve gotten cheeky with the choices offered:
If You RSVP, Do You Promise to Show Up?
Option A) Yeah, I'm One of Those People You Can Actually Rely On.
Option B) Flakers Suck, I Mean They Really Suck. So Yeah, Count on Me.
Option C) What Kind of Parents Raised Such Inconsiderate People? Certainly Not Mine.
Mix and match and get creative with the verbiage as you see fit, but not a bad way to get early buy-in to your values eh? š
Itās only lightly confronting, with a dash of harmless snark and dry humor tossed in, reinforces better behavior and creates an overall better sense of reciprocity between guests and hosts.
Win win in my opinion.
So feel free to take this tactic and run with it, join me in reducing the amount of flakers we have in our midst.
Weāll all be better for it.
