The Sugary Effect

The Unseen Iceberg of NYC's Social Life

New York City is a vibrant melting pot of cultures, events, and opportunities. But behind the hustle and bustle lies a problematic trend: flaking.

As a local community and events expert, I can attest that flaking is damaging our city's social fabric.

Flaking: the act of canceling plans or not showing up to events after committing to attend – is an epidemic in the Big Apple.

It has led to wasted resources, disappointed event organizers, and strained relationships.

Here's why it's crucial to keep your commitments and RSVP with responsibility.

Respect: When you flake, you disregard the time and effort put into organizing an event. Your absence affects not only the organizers but also other attendees who were looking forward to meeting you.

Reliability: In a city where building trust is essential, flaking tarnishes your reputation. By being dependable, you'll be considered an asset in both your professional and social circles.

Reciprocity: When you honor your commitments, others are more likely to do the same. This creates a positive cycle of accountability, leading to stronger bonds and more meaningful connections.

Let's change the narrative, New Yorkers!

Next time you RSVP, make a conscious effort to honor your word. By doing so, you'll contribute to a stronger and more reliable NYC community, and inspire others to do the same.

Because when it comes to the city that never sleeps, a little commitment goes a long way.

PAST EVENTS

Sat, April 15th - Zombie Tag @The Met - Nearly 60 of you joined us for some curated chaos as we took over The Met. After exploring the halls for two hours, Charlotte Reardon emerged as the elated but frazzled winner.

The feedback was overwhelming - "Can we PLEASE have another one soon?" Well, we thought you'd ask, so make sure you RSVP for the next one below!

Zombie Tag @The Met

Sunday April 23rd - Grand Potluck - A feast to remember for sure, with an eclectic selection of sumptuous cuisine set against the backdrop of the Hudson River at a beautiful home in Harlem. Almost 30 of you turned out, and that wasn't even 1/3 of the people who wanted to come! So, we're definitely doing another one and soon to accommodate those who couldn't make it. With the amount of people interested, we might even make it a monthly thing…

Wed April 26th - Craving More - A fascinating conversation at Neuehouse that drew a packed house as three women who are luminaries in the F&B space dazzled the audience with appetizing anecdotes regarding the state of food such as the monopolistic and selective practices of the online behemoth know only as Resy. It was a thought-provoking and inspiring night that left us all hungry for more.

Sunday April 16th - Wreckroom + Sugary New Music Showcase - Almost 200 of you packed Rockwood to hear Adam Knight and Rachel Rose perform their artistry. This collaboration with Wreckroom brought down the house, and we received over 50 separate notes of gratitude reflecting how much good music mattered to you all.

AND DON’T SAY I DIDN’T TELL YOU ABOUT…

Wreckroom Studios

Tucked in on a nondescript quiet street in Ft. Greene is a house that hides a secret.

The entrance opens into a generous living room and as you descend the stairs into the basement you discover a fully functioning recording studio.

It’s a place where musicians and creatives gather monthly for the music and stay for the good casual vibes. The gatherings attract a young, inclusive, and diverse crowd who share a love for music. It's the perfect place to unwind and mingle with like-minded creatives in a casual and friendly atmosphere. The vibe is effortless, making it feel like a good house party with a musical twist akin to SoFar Sounds.

I’m talking about the socials and ticketed music salons at Safe and Sound Studios hosted by Wreckroom.

Whether you're a music industry insider or just someone who appreciates good tunes, you'll find something to love there. And who knows, you might even discover a new favorite artist or make some new friends along the way.

So don't miss out on these amazing series at Wreckroom.

Socials are typically every third Thursday of the month and Showcases are typically every first Friday of the month and make sure to tell them Sugary sent you!
